Question:
Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
What is the Shari ruling on bridal showers?
There is a new trend among our communities called tea with the bride/afternoon with the bride, where the bride hosts her friends for a meal or tea. What is the Shari ruling on this?
Is there a difference in Shariah between a bridal shower and tea/afternoon with the bride?
What is the ruling for attending such gatherings?
Also, what’s the rule on Tashabuh? When does something fall under Tashabuh or not? Does intention play a part in Tashabuh?
Please provide full references
Answer:
As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhu
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
It is permissible for the bride to host her friends for a meal as an expression of joy. However, this invitation is not to be considered a necessary part of getting married nor should it attract undue and exorbitant expenses. Furthermore, the invitation
- Must be with a happy heart (not under social pressure, etc.),
- Is not given as means of boasting or competing, and
- Should be free of non-Islamic practices i.e. singing, dancing, intermingling, extravagance etc.
Brother, there is a stark difference between inviting friends for a meal as an expression of joy and having a bridal shower which is a is a gift-giving party held for a bride-to-be in anticipation of her wedding.
In Islamic society, marriage was originally characterized by simplicity; however, over time it has become increasingly weighed down by excessive formalities. Islām itself prescribes neither complexity nor ostentation in matters of marriage. Its directives and teachings are exemplary. Yet, through ignorance, the urge to display wealth, and an attachment to customs and traditions, we have distorted the true spirit of nikāḥ. Consequently, marriage has come to be viewed as a “burden” rather than a blessing. Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم explicitly stated that the most blessed marriage is the one in which the least expenditure is incurred.
The catalogue of wedding-related customs was already extensive, and it has now been further expanded by the introduction of a ceremony known as the “bridal shower,” wherein gifts are presented for the bride. This practice, imported from Western culture, not only reflects imitation of non-Islamic norms but also serves to further complicate and inflate the cost of what is meant to be a straightforward and accessible institution. There is therefore a clear need to abandon such practices and to actively discourage their observance.
You have asked questions about tashabbuh. Please find hereunder a reproduction from Mawlāna Ashraf ʿAlī Thanwī’s Tuḥfah al-ʿUlāmā:
An Explanation of Tashabbuh (Imitation)
The issue of tashabbuh (imitation) is established by explicit Qurʾānic text. The ḥadīth states: “Whoever imitates a people is from among them.” It was once heard regarding some students of Deoband that they claimed this ḥadīth to be weak. I responded that although I had not personally verified the ḥadīth in terms of its chain of transmission, I would establish its meaning directly from the Qurʾān itself. This issue is clearly present in the Qurʾān, where Allāh says:
“And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you.”
This indicates that inclining toward the people of falsehood is unlawful. Along with this, a principle should be borne in mind: imitation (tashabbuh) does not occur without inclination (rukūn) and inner leaning of the heart. Whenever imitation exists, it necessarily exists alongside inclination. First, admiration arises in the heart, followed by a sense of esteem or gratitude toward them, and then a tendency toward them develops; from this inclination, imitation results. Therefore, when inclination itself is unlawful, imitation must also be unlawful. This is the conclusion, even if some today dismiss the statement “Whoever imitates a people is from among them” as something they do not understand. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) has examined this ḥadīth in Iqtiḍāʾ aṣ-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm and authenticated it.
Evidence for the Prohibition of Imitation from Ḥadīth
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade calling the ʿIshāʾ prayer ʿAtamah, even though it was linguistically valid, because it was a term used by the people of Jāhiliyyah. For this reason, he disliked its use.
Rational and Customary Evidence for the Prohibition of Imitation
This issue is not only practical but also rational. If a Muslim man were to wear his wife’s colourful outfit and sit on a chair at a public gathering, would this not be repugnant to him and to those observing him? The reason for this repugnance is nothing but imitation. If imitation of a morally upright Muslim woman feels objectionable, then imitation of immoral women among disbelievers and evildoers should be even more objectionable.
In one district, a man went to court wearing a Turkish cap. The district collector became extremely upset, saying, “Why have you come wearing the cap of those opposed to the government?” and had him arrested. I often say that
“Whoever imitates a people is from among them” is practically a proverbial truth.
Consider that in a time of war, if someone were to wear German clothing or speak the German language without necessity, how displeasing this would be to the authorities. If this is objectionable, then why should it be considered acceptable when it concerns religious matters? What objection remains against the Sharīʿah if it prohibits imitating opponents and deniers? The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم did not even permit the use of words commonly employed by disbelievers.
Types of Imitation (Tashabbuh) and Their Rulings
- Adopting practices that are part of another people’s religious identity constitutes disbelief, such as wearing a cross, keeping a religious forelock, or shaving in a religiously distinctive manner.
- Imitation in social dealings and national symbols is makrūh taḥrīmī (prohibitively disliked). For example, using clothing that is distinctive and exclusive to a particular people such that the wearer is regarded as one of them, like the Christian cap (hat) or the Hindu dhoti, is unlawful and prohibited. Similarly, adopting the language, accent, or style of speech of disbelievers with the intention of resembling them, such as imitating the English, would undoubtedly be prohibited.
- As for things that are neither national nor religious symbols of another people, even if they were originally invented by them and are items of general necessity, such as matches, watches, or new weapons for which Muslims have no alternatives, their use is permissible. However, the details of such matters should not be determined independently; rather, scholars should be consulted.
- Adopting the distinctive practices of sinful or heretical Muslims is also sinful. If the entire distinctive form is adopted, the sin is greater; if partially adopted, the sin is lesser.
The criterion is this: wherever a matter is the distinctive practice of a people, and the mind naturally associates it with disbelievers and their exclusivity, imitation applies; otherwise, it does not.
Summary of the Rulings of Imitation
Imitation of disbelievers in religious matters is unlawful; in social dealings it is makrūh taḥrīmī. In inventions and administrative matters, it is permissible and not truly imitation. Items possessed by disbelievers for which Muslims have no alternatives, and which are neither religious nor national symbols, may be adopted, such as firearms and airplanes. If alternatives exist among Muslims, then imitation is makrūh. The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade the use of a Persian-style bow.
Degrees of Imitation
From explicit texts it is established that imitating falsehood, particularly non-Muslims, and especially the People of the Book, is subject to severe warning. The severity of the warning in “Whoever imitates a people is from among them” is evident, as imitation of disbelievers is described as becoming one of them. Association with them is already blameworthy, and when imitation relates to religious matters, it becomes even more severe.
When Imitation Ceases Due to Widespread Custom
When a practice becomes widespread and dominant custom, its association with imitation may fall away. Regarding eating on tables and chairs, there is hesitation in some regions because it has become common and well-known there, and due to this prevalence, it may no longer constitute imitation. However, since it has not become universally common everywhere, a sense of unease still remains; as long as such unease exists, the practice remains impermissible due to imitation.
And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
