Question:
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatulahi Wa Barakaatuhu
I trust that all my Beloved Ulema at MUBZ are well and protected and blessed by our Creator.
A sister in Islam approached me last night with a question. She is booked to go for Umrah later in the year and is currently attending classes. The Sheikh taught them the following and I quote ” I am looking for Hadith where Allah speak about a tunnel. Sheikh told us to look it up. Two types of people. The one will follow the other but the ones leading are the ones who has the light. so the other have to keep up with the ones who has a light. So the others have to keep up with them to be able to see the way. Its not a hadith, its a surah hadith. Have you heard that we are all going to go through a tunnel. Very , very, very dark tunnel. He mentioned that when we are dead, we will go through this tunnel more darker than our grave”
Firstly, I am in no way authorized in anyway to comment on this as I have never heard this or would in anyway assume what the Quranic verse says in direct translation. Secondly, I am very scared and weary of how our beautiful religion of Islam is being misinterpreted by not only non-muslim but also Muslim. I dont want to be guilty of misleading the Ummah and hence I am asking for guidance. Thirdly, I never heard of something called a “hadith surah”. This is the verse the Sheikh referred to upto verse 15:
يَوۡمَ يَقُولُ ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَٱلۡمُنَٰفِقَٰتُ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱنظُرُونَا نَقۡتَبِسۡ مِن نُّورِكُمۡ قِيلَ ٱرۡجِعُواْ وَرَآءَكُمۡ فَٱلۡتَمِسُواْ نُورٗاۖ فَضُرِبَ بَيۡنَهُم بِسُورٖ لَّهُۥ بَابُۢ بَاطِنُهُۥ فِيهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَةُ وَظَٰهِرُهُۥ مِن قِبَلِهِ ٱلۡعَذَابُ(57:13)
Yawma yaqoolul munaafiqoona walmunaafiqaatu lil-lazeena aamanun zuroonaa naqtabis min noorikum qeela irji’oo waraaa’akum faltamisoo nooran faduriba bainahum bisooril lahoo baabun, baatinuhoo feehir rahmatu Wa-zaahiruhoo min qibalihi ‘azaab— Transliteration (Tajweed)
On that Day hypocrite men and women will beg the believers, “Wait for us so that we may have some of your light.” It will be said ˹mockingly˺, “Go back ˹to the world˺ and seek a light ˹there˺!” Then a ˹separating˺ wall with a gate will be erected between them. On the near side will be grace and on the far side will be torment.
May Allah always protect you, guide you, bless you and allow to be our guiding lights in these dark times.

As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhu
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We were unable to locate any authentic Ḥadīth or Qur’ānic verse that makes mention of us passing through a “very dark tunnel” after death.
The verses which you have referenced in your query refers to events on the Day of Judgement. The light mentioned is the actual light that believers will carry on the Day of Judgment to guide them across the bridge over Jahannam. The hypocrites will be denied this light, and therefore they will beg the believers for sharing it. They will then be told to go back to the world, as an indication that they lost their chance to earn it while they were here.
The wall mentioned in the verse is a barrier that will be placed between the believers and hypocrites. For the believers who will be on one side of that wall, there will be mercy which refers to Jannah, and for the hypocrites on the other side of the wall, will be a punishment (Jahannam).
Therefore, from the above explanation we can understand that this verse refers to a scene on the Day of Judgement, where light will be a symbol of those who had true Īmān and good actions. This verse does not speak about a very dark tunnel.
The term “surah hadith” is not a valid terminology. Perhaps the Shaykh meant “the Tafsīr of a verse using a Ḥadīth”.

وقوله: {يوم يقول المنافقون والمنافقات للذين آمنوا انظرونا نقتبس من نوركم} وهذا إخبار منه تعالى عما يقع يوم القيامة في العرصات من الأهوال المزعجة، والزلازل العظيمة، والأمور الفظيعة (5) وإنه لا ينجو يومئذ إلا من آمن بالله ورسوله، وعمل بما أمر الله، به وترك ما عنه زجر….
ثم تنتقلون منه إلى منزل آخر فتغشى الناس ظلمة شديدة، ثم يقسم النور فيعطى المؤمن نورا ويترك الكافر والمنافق فلا يعطيان شيئا، وهو المثل الذي ضربه الله في كتابه، قال {أو كظلمات في بحر لجي} إلى قوله: {فما له من نور} [النور: 40] ، فلا يستضيء الكافر والمنافق بنور المؤمن كما لا يستضيء الأعمى بنور (7) البصير، ويقول المنافقون للذين آمنوا: {انظرونا نقتبس من نوركم قيل ارجعوا وراءكم فالتمسوا نورا} وهي خدعة الله التي خدع بها المنافقين (1) حيث قال: {يخادعون الله وهو خادعهم} [النساء:142] . فيرجعون إلى المكان الذي قسم فيه النور، فلا يجدون شيئا فينصرفون إليهم وقد ضرب بينهم بسور له باب، {باطنه فيه الرحمة وظاهره من قبله العذاب} الآية……..
وقال العوفي، والضحاك، وغيرهما، عن ابن عباس: بينما الناس في ظلمة إذ بعث الله نورا فلما رأي المؤمنون النور توجهوا نحوه، وكان النور (2) دليلا من الله إلى الجنة، فلما رأى المنافقون المؤمنين قد انطلقوا اتبعوهم، فأظلم الله على المنافقين، فقالوا حينئذ: {انظرونا نقتبس من نوركم} فإنا كنا معكم في الدنيا. قال المؤمنون: {ارجعوا} من حيث جئتم من الظلمة، فالتمسوا هنالك النور.
وقال أبو القاسم الطبراني: حدثنا الحسن بن علويه القطان، حدثنا إسماعيل بن عيسى العطار، حدثنا إسحاق بن بشر أبو (3) حذيفة، حدثنا ابن جريج، عن ابن أبي مليكة، عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: “إن الله يدعو الناس يوم القيامة بأسمائهم سترا منه على عباده، وأما عند الصراط فإن الله يعطي كل مؤمن نورا، وكل منافق نورا، فإذا استووا على الصراط سلب الله نور المنافقين والمنافقات فقال المنافقون: {انظرونا نقتبس من نوركم} وقال المؤمنون: {ربنا أتمم لنا نورنا} [التحريم: 8] . فلا يذكر عند ذلك أحد أحدا” (4) وقوله: {فضرب بينهم بسور له باب باطنه فيه الرحمة وظاهره من قبله العذاب} قال الحسن، وقتادة: هو حائط بين الجنة النار.
وقال عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم: هو الذي قال الله تعالى: {وبينهما حجاب} [الأعراف: 46] . وهكذا روي عن مجاهد، رحمه الله، وغير واحد، وهو الصحيح.
{باطنه فيه الرحمة} أي: الجنة وما فيها {وظاهره من قبله العذاب} أي: النار. قاله قتادة، وبن زيد، وغيرهما.
