Question:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

I hope this email finds you well. Alhumdurillah, my husband and I are expecting our first baby. We are writing to inquire about the meanings and suitability of the following names for our child: Asmaa and Muhammad Ayaan.

Could you please provide us with the meanings and significance of these names in Islam? We would greatly appreciate your guidance in choosing a beautiful and meaningful name for our child.

Jazakallah khair for your time and assistance.

As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhu

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

We apologise for the belated response. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ has encouraged giving children good names, as a name can influence a person’s character. It is mentioned in a Ḥadīth:

إنكم ‌تدعون ‌يوم ‌القيامة باسمائكم وأسماء آبائكم، فاحسنوا أسماءكم

Translation: “Indeed, you will be called on the day of Qiyāmah by your names and the names of your forefathers. Therefore, choose beautiful names.”

Asmā’:

The name Asmaa (Asmā’) is an arabic girl name which means a person who is high in status (lofty/eminent). Asmā’ was also the name of a Ṣaḥābiyyah, the daughter of Abū Bakr t who was the closest friend and the companion of Nabī ﷺ in the cave at the time of Hijrah. She was the 18th person to accept Islām.

Asmā’ t played a significant role in the success of the migration of Nabī ﷺ, which was a means of turning a new page in the call to Islamic, and it had an effect on the entire world at that time. During the journey of migration, she was tasked with bringing provisions to their hide out. Once, she could not find anything with which she could tie the food bundle for the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. She therefore tore one of her garments and tied the bundle with that piece of cloth. For this reason, she was given the title of Dhāt al-Nātiqayn (the possessor of 2 pieces of cloths) and she was given the glad tidings of two garments in Paradise. Even though she reached the ripe age of 100, her mental state remained strong until the end.

Muḥammad Ayān:

The name Ayaan can be pronounced in two ways:

  1. Ayān (أَيَان) – Meaning a gift of God
  2. ʿAyyān (عَيَّان) – Meaning wide-eyed

Both pronunciations and meanings are permissible.

And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
