Question:
Aslm respected mlna.. My son who’s 22 has these questions that I may not be able to answer correctly.. Kindly advice/explain please
1. He says that if Allah swt has already predestined our lives.. If everything is already planned out by Allah swt then why should we get punished or rewarded for anything that we do??
I think he’s basically asking about taqdeer
2. He says that why do people have to go to war and kill each other to bring them on Deen when it’s already written if they’ll have Imaan or not?
3. He says when he’s in any gathering of Deen he feels extremely uneasy..
He’s also tried to commit suicide, I’m very scared right now..
I don’t know how to handle this situation and afraid to say the wrong thing
Please advise.. Jzk khair
Answer:
As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhū
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Respected sister,
It saddens us to hear of the difficult situation you are facing and we are sympathetic to the challenges your son is going through. Hereunder are the answers to your queries:
1. Allāh Taʿālā has given man the choice to choose between good and evil. His eternal abode will be determined by the choices he makes in this life and is a consequence of what has been written in his taqdīr. Belief in taqdīr does not negate free will.
We are responsible for making the right choices and asking of Allāh to include us amongst the fortunate souls who will enjoy the everlasting enjoyments of Jannah. Consider the following duʿā of ʿUmar
Translation: O Allāh if You have preordained wretchedness or sin for me, then expunge it. Verily You delete and affirm as You wish and by you remains the mother book. And transform it to fortune and forgiveness.
2. Jihād has been instituted to liberate the creation from servitude of the creation and honour them by way of servitude to the Creator, Allāh Taʿālā. When Non-Muslims see, interact, and live with Muslims, they will no doubt be affected by the purity of monotheism and the natural instinct within them will want to make the choice; the right choice come into the fold of Islām.
This is quite evident from looking at the statistics of the USA. Between 2000-2010, Muslims in the U.S. grew from an estimated 1 million to 2.6 million, a 67 percent increase, making it the fastest growing religion in the United States, according to the nongovernmental U.S. Religion Census. By 2017, the number of Muslims in the U.S. was estimated at 3.45 million, according to Pew Research.
Thus, Jihād and by extension, interactions with non-Muslims does serve a higher purpose. It allows them to exercise their Allāh given free-will and attain everlasting salvation.
3. Feelings of unease are not against the prophetic teachings. When Nabī صلى الله عليه وسلم received the first revelation, he came to his beloved wife, Khadījah رضي الله عنها and expressed to her his feelings of anxiousness and unease. One should not be deterred by such feelings. In fact, his sitting in such gatherings with feelings of unease will accrue him much greater reward.
Sister, taking into consideration the emotional state of your son, we advise you to seek professional help through mental health counselling. It would further be of great benefit if he develops a relationship with a capable and reliable scholar who would be able to guide him through these turbulent times.

We make duʿā to Allāh Taʿālā to ease your difficulty and grant your son contentment.
And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
