Question:
Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatulahi Wa Barakaatu
My niece recently named her son Abdul Qadeer. There seem to be major arguments between a few learned people about the meaning and it being offensive.
Please may i urgently have your guidance on this so that we can change the name of her new born if need be.

Answer:
As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhū
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم has ordered us to keep good names. The name of a person influences the traits and characteristics of the person. Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم has mentioned:
من ولد له ولد فليحسن اسمه وأدبه
Translation: Whoever is graced with a child, he should give him a beautiful name and beautify his character.
Furthermore, Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم has stated:
إنكم تدعون يوم القيامة باسمائكم وأسماء آبائكم، فاحسنوا أسماءكم
Translation: Surely, you will be called on the Day of Judgment according to your names and your fathers’ names. Therefore, beautify your names.
Qadīr is an attribute of Allāh Taʿālā which means ‘All-Powerful’. This attribute is mentioned a number of times in the Qur’ān. For example, Allāh Taʿālā says in Sūrah al-Fāṭir:
أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَكَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةًۭ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعْجِزَهُۥ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَلَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَلِيمًۭا قَدِيرًۭا
Translation: Allāh is not such that something in the heavens or the earth can frustrate Him. Surely, He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful.
We have been taught by Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم to keep names that reflect our servitude to Allāh Taʿālā. Such names are beloved by Allāh Taʿālā. Consider the following Ḥadīth:
تسموا بأسماء الأنبياء، وأحب الأسماء إلى الله: عبد الله وعبد الرحمن
Translation: Keep the names of the Prophets and the names most beloved to Allāh are ʿAbd Allāh (Servant of Allāh) and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (Servant of The Most Merciful).
The commentators explain that this is not restricted to these two names but include all other names that depict a person’s servitude to Allāh Taʿālā.
The name ‘Abdul Qadeer’ means ‘Servant of The All-Powerful’.
Accordingly, it would be permissible to keep the name ‘Abdul Qadeer’.
And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
