A Woman in Ḥayḍ Reciting Qur’ān.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa barakatu Moulana.

Moulana I came across this video regarding menses and reciting the Quran where the shiekh in the video said it is allowed

There are other videos as well but its longer stating that there are no clear evidences such as Quran/ hadith saying that it is impermissible for women to recite Quran during menstruation. Therefore I have had the understanding for a while that reciting Quran on haith is allowed so I have been reciting Manzil, Ayatul Kursi, 3 Quls, S. Fatiha and sometimes some other surahs eg: S. Mulk from memory Alhamdullilah never actually sitting and touching the Quraan . I would like to know if I may forward this video to you and ask Moulana to please clarify this for me? Unfortunately the media today gives so much different answers and fatwas and this creates confusion.

Respected sister,

In principle, a woman in ḥayḍ (menstruation) is not permitted to recite the Qur’ān whether from memory, using a copy of the Qur’ān, or an electronic device.

This prohibition is clearly stated in the aḥādīth. Rasūlullah (sallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has stated:

لاَ تَقْرَأِ الحَائِضُ، وَلاَ الجُنُبُ شَيْئًا مِنَ القُرْآنِ

Translation: A woman in her ḥayḍ (menstruation) and a person who is in the state of janābah (major impurity) should not recite any portion of the Qur’ān.
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī]

There are other similar narrations found in the books of hadith such as, Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Sunan Daraqutni, and others.

Sister, as you have mentioned that today we are given many differing views and can find it confusing. This is true.

Our advice would be to seek rulings from one Mufti you have reliance on and stick with those rulings. In this manner you will find contentment and ease.

And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
